X-Ray Diffraction: In Crystals, Imperfect Crystals, and Amorphous Bodies
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (July, 1994)
Author: Andre Guinier
Average review score:

A Classic.......
Well...this book is definitely a "must have" book on diffraction if you're interested in this field. Dr. Guiner, for those who are not familiar with diffraction, was one of the leading scientist in the field and contributed much to the development of x-ray diffractometry. The book is definitely not for the beginner. However, for someone who has made his/her initial steps into the world of x-ray crystallography, this book might be rewarding to read for it discusses the fundamentals rigorously. The book is very affordable as well, making it a very attractive buy indeed...I highly recommend it.

A good self-help resource
Practical experience and basic concept of imaging equipment theory, function and repair. Lots of valuable information on installation, calibration and quality. Could be a good book for an associate degree program in biomedical or clinical technology or for someone already working in the field who would like to migrate into imaging repairs.

The Yoga Mala
Published in Paperback by Hart Productions (February, 1989)
Authors: Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and Ray Rosenthal
Average review score:

Essential reading
This is one of the essential yoga texts. No serious yoga student can be without it. It was originally published privately in a short run a few years back and sold thousands of copies with no advertising. The new edition has a helpful new forward by the translator that gives more in-depth info on how Jois came to study yoga inthe 1920's. Beautifully designed, flawlessly translated, and amazing historical photographs. With all the silly yoga books out there, we should be grateful that Jois and some others still maintain high standards.

You Are Here: The Jerde Partnership International
Published in Hardcover by Phaidon Press Inc. (October, 1999)
Authors: Ray Bradbury, Jerde Partnership International, Frances Anderton, and Norman M. Klein
Average review score:

Tomorrowland Today
The Jerde Partnership new literary retrospective is as stunning as one of their architectural projects. Under the always forward thinking direction of Jon Jerde, the Jerde Partnership has redefined the mall shopping experience to what it is today.

Designers like the Jon Jerde are masterful in getting conservative real estate developers to buy into wildly unimaginable design and then execute them to perfection. I always wonder how the Jerde Partnership would redesign the Amazon.coms of the electronic world to make the online world a better place.

I highly recommend this book as a great conversation piece, a behind the scene view of the process of selling large ideas, and a stunning display of architectural design that has been copied over and over but never duplicated.

You Don't Have to Quit
Published in Paperback by Thomas Nelson (February, 1994)
Authors: Ray Ortlund, Ann Ortlund, Anne Ortlund, and Raymond C., Jr. Ortlund

Ready to give up? - Read this first
This book starts with a graphical, three part model that forms the basis of the book. It describes each task / journey / endeavor / relationship, etc. as going through three stages - the initial startup phase, the "problem phase" and the success or maintenance phase. It then provides valuable insight to what characterizes each phase and prepares you for barriers that will occur and offers sound strategies to counter them. Forewarned is forearmed. Some would say this is pretty simple, but I think many powerful concepts are indeed simple. This is a book that you can easily read in a few sittings but it's model and message will stay with you forever. I've given copies to my 3 children and two friends - one contemplating divorce and the other wanting to quit his job. Highly recommeneded to all ages and all people. Wish I had read it when I was in high school.

You Live and Learn, Then You Die and Forget It All: Ray Lum's Tales of Horses, Mules, and Men
Published in Paperback by Anchor Books (April, 1992)
Authors: William R. Ferris, Ray Lum, and Eudora Welty
Average review score:

A story for the genuine, native Mississippian
One of the ways we Mississippians shrug off how well we have done is to make the statement, "Well, I'm just an old mule trader". Bill Ferris seems to have captured just that statement. Here is the tale of a simple man, Ray Lum, born 1 of 9 children who by sheer will became a celebrated livestock trader, a big fish in a small pond so to speak. His charm and wit made him successful in a business full of bootleggers, con men and rattlesnakes. I particularily liked the part when Ray visits the graveyard where his ancestors are "planted". I think it should be required reading in Mississippi Civics classes in high school.

Young Inline Skater

It's not only for kids
This is a wonderful book for both children and adult. (except sort of discouraging to see little kid skating that well and doing all the hard moves, like jumping a ramp.) There are great skating maintainence section and all the basic moves.

Zap! Ray Gun Classics
Published in Paperback by Chronicle Books (October, 1991)
Author: Leslie Singer
Average review score:

Zap back to childhood
I love books about the backwaters of American popular culture so I was pleased to get a copy of Leslie Singer's affectionate look at ray guns of the past. The hundred color photos in this nicely presented book will provoke plenty of nostalgia for those who grew up with Buck Rogers. Mr Singer's favorite is the Atomic Disintergrator (page 18) but my favorite is the space car (page 48) streamline curves straight out of the New York World's Fair in 1939, thought it was made by Wannatoys in the fifties. Not a gun but it looks so good Singer included it anyway!

If you are really into the subject have a look at 'Ray Gun' by Eugene Metcalf and Frank Maresca, plenty of excellent color photos, including a quite stunning gun (page 101) from sixties England, the Space Outlaw Gun. There is also a selection of film posters and boxes the guns came in. Both books have a useful bibliography and 'Ray Gun' even lists a web site... ...

"ZAPY YAPY" WHAT A WONDERFULL BOOK!!
This is hands down, one of the greatest childrens book I've ever read. The stories are well thought and the illustrations are fun and great to look at. All and all I think that Dr. Sues is a mere 2nd to this great Author and Illustrator! I'll be reading this book to my children and grandchildren for years to come.
